About us... The IFSCC & KOSMET

A Brief History of the IFSCC

The International Federation Societies of Cosmetic Chemists (IFSCC) is a truly worldwide federation dedicated to international cooperation in cosmetic science and technology. Interest in the formation of such an organization crystallized in Paris in 1956 and culminated in the birth of the federation in Brussels, Belgium on September 8, 1959. At that time there were only 8 countries entering the Federation.

Today, 47 Societies representing 53 countries have met the high standards of scientific and educational qualifications of the IFSCC and, as members, support the organization's aims and programs. The most recent countries to join are Bulgaria, Romania, Jordan, Russia and Slovakia. The number of individual members in the Federation now exceeds 13,000 and is still growing.

The IFSCC continues to grow as the cosmetic industry expands worldwide. As new Societies develop in Eastern Europe, Asia, Africa and Latin America, they will be welcomed into the Federation as they qualify for membership. Interested Societies may contact the IFSCC office for further information and assistance. Interested groups of cosmetic chemists, not having a national Society formed yet in their country, may get special assistance through IFSCC Presidium members (see details for contact at the end).

IFSCC Governance and Organization:
The Federation has a bicameral governing body consisting of a Presidium and a Council of delegates from member societies. The Council and Presidium meet annually in the fall. The Presidium also meets every spring, usually in Europe.
A Constitution, approved by the Council, regulates the organizational structures and aims of the Federation; and an Operations Manual specifies in detail the tasks for the individual Presidium members.

The operations of the IFSCC are co-coordinated by the Presidium, which consist of:
The President
The Immediate Past President
The Vice President
The Treasurer
The Honorary Secretary
Up to three Committee Members - normally: Committee Member Number 3, 2, and 1
Chair of the Science
Chair of Education Committee
Chair of the Public Relations Committee
Chair of the Publications Committee

The head office of the IFSCC constitutes the Secretariat of the Federation. This office is maintained in the cooperation with the British Society of Cosmetic Scientists (SCS). The administrative executive of this office is the General Secretary of the IFSCC, Mrs. Lorna Weston. As Assistant to the General Secretary works Miss Lindy Underwood.
